App "Stay Safe - Safety Radar" · version of 21 October 2026
In short: the risk level you see is computed entirely on your device. Your location leaves your phone only if you choose to share your live location: then your latest position is kept on our website for the people you sent the link to, and deleted when sharing ends (section 4). To rate an area, the app downloads that area's data file from our website, which, like any website, sees the address your request comes from (section 3). No ads, no tracking, no account.

This policy is written to meet the EU General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) and the UK GDPR, under which most of this app's users will be located alongside the United States. Where it matters, the stricter rule is the one the app follows.
Stay Safe needs your location to show the risk level of the area you're in. That lookup happens entirely on your device: the app holds a file of risk areas for the covered area you are in and checks your position against it locally. For the risk level, your location is never sent to us or to anyone else. The only exception is live sharing, which you start yourself (section 4).
If you turn on the optional "Warn me on the move" background alerts, your position is checked the same way, in the background, purely to decide whether to show you a local notification. That check still happens only on your device.
The app does not carry every covered area's data with it — that would be a very large download for areas you will never visit. Instead, the first time you are inside a covered area, the app downloads that one area's risk file from our website and keeps it on your device. After that, the area works with no connection at all.
That download is an ordinary HTTPS request for a public file, the same kind your browser makes. It carries no account, no identifier and no coordinates — only the name of the file, which does tell our hosting provider which covered area (a city or region) was asked for, and nothing finer. As with any web request, our hosting provider (Cloudflare) necessarily sees your device's IP address and the file requested in order to deliver it, and keeps that in standard server logs. We do not use those logs to identify or track anyone, and we do not combine them with anything else. The legal basis is Article 6(1)(b) GDPR: delivering the file is the service you bought.
The app also checks, at most once per launch, for a short list of newly covered areas. That request works exactly the same way.
You can see every covered area, and delete any downloaded one, under Settings → Covered areas.
If you tap Share live location and pick how long (1 hour, 8 hours or until you stop), the app creates a private link and hands it to your phone's share sheet, so you choose who receives it. Anyone who opens that link sees your position on a map in their browser until the sharing ends. Sharing is never started by anyone else and never runs hidden — the app shows it, Android shows a notification and iPhone its location indicator — and you can stop it at any time with one tap.
What is sent. While sharing, the app sends your latest position to our website (hosted by Cloudflare) over an encrypted connection — every few seconds while you move, every couple of minutes while you stand still: the coordinates, their accuracy, the name and risk level of the covered area you are in, and when the sharing ends. No name, phone number, account or device identifier is sent. The link contains a random code that cannot be guessed; a second secret code, which only your phone has, makes sure nobody else can change or end the sharing.
How long it is kept. Only the most recent position is kept — every update overwrites the one before, so no route or history is stored. It is deleted as soon as you stop sharing or the chosen time runs out. With "until I stop", if your phone goes silent (switched off, no connection), the position is deleted at the latest about a day after its last update.
The people you share with. The map page they open loads its map images from OpenStreetMap (openstreetmap.org) and its map code from cdnjs (Cloudflare). Their browsers therefore contact those services, which see their IP address and which part of the map is shown. The page sets no cookies and we store nothing about them.
Legal basis. Article 6(1)(b) GDPR: showing your position to the people you chose is the service you asked for by starting it. You end it — and with it the processing — by tapping Stop.
| What | Why | Where |
|---|---|---|
| Risk-area data for areas you have been in | So a risk level can be shown with no connection | The app's own storage on your device; removable in Settings |
| Whether you've completed the first-run introduction, and whether background alerts are turned on | So the app doesn't repeat the introduction, and remembers your choice | The app's own storage on your device |
| While you share your live location: the link's code, the secret update code and the end time | So the sharing keeps running in the background and can be stopped | The app's own storage on your device; deleted when sharing ends |
We never receive any of this.
A background-alert notification is created and shown entirely by the operating system, triggered by on-device logic. No notification content, and no event that triggered one, is sent to us.
If you have iCloud Backup or Android Backup switched on, your operating system may include the app's storage in that backup. That backup is handled by Apple or Google under their own privacy policies, not by us. You can exclude the app in your device settings.
If you write to us, we process your email address and whatever you put in the message, on the legal basis of Article 6(1)(f) GDPR — our legitimate interest in answering you. We keep the correspondence as long as needed to deal with it, then delete it.
The app is not directed at children and does not knowingly collect anything from them — in practice it collects nothing from anyone, of any age, beyond the on-device items and the optional live sharing described above.
Under the GDPR and UK GDPR you have the right of access, rectification, erasure, restriction, data portability and objection, and the right to complain to a supervisory authority. In practice there is nothing for us to give you, correct or erase: we hold no data about you, except a live position while you share it, which you erase yourself at any time by tapping Stop. If you believe otherwise, write to the address above and we will look into it.
If the app ever changes in a way that affects this policy, the policy is updated before that version is published, and the date at the top changes with it.
